How to be happy at work?

First, I'll tell you about my experience with a long walk of 3 hours. And why I enjoyed it tremendously.

That day, I just recovered from a cold. I was a little tired. Snow still covered the roads, so I walked very carefully. I enjoyed each step. I didn't hurry to arrive. I also enjoyed the dogs passing by, the trees, grass, and the sky. To my surprise, the more I walked, the stronger my body became. The tiredness in my body disappeared. A sense of expansion arose.

When approaching my house, I contemplated the sunny sky and felt tremendously happy! I heard myself repeating again and again "Oh my happiness! Oh my happiness!"

How could that be? What made me so happy on the whole journey, especially at the end?

The answer is simple: I was mindful and enjoyed each step. The energy of mindful walking accumulated from all mindful steps during the whole journey made me feel exploded with happiness at the end.

Imagine if I were hurried to arrive, I would have ended up miserable...

This way of mindful walking can be applied to working. Start with a small, tiny piece of work; do it very carefully, and you may end up feeling greatly satisfied. Don't hurry to finish it. Don't expect good responses from others. Otherwise, you will always feel up and down.

Ups and downs are only in the state of mind. That's our emotional reactions to reality. In fact, the reality is just it, suchness. If we are totally in the moment, not in our internal world so much, we won't waste so much energy on so-called ups and downs.

You have to be the first one who enjoys it greatly! You are already happy with your work.

Oprah said: “What I know is that, if you do work that you love, and the work fulfills you, the rest will come.”

A philosophical Steve Jobs maxim is “The joy is in the journey.”

And I believe both of them!
